Roll with the punches!I'm a little sad to be writing this post when things were going so perfectly but alas, life has other plans for me. As I have mentioned in previous posts I'm currently a college student, expected graduation: December 2014. I've been completing my dietetic interns for about a year now and only have one left to complete. Two of my three internships have been for the same company, which seems to have taken a strong interest in me. They have offered me a job .....pre-graduation!
|It's an opportunity I just can't pass up!|
It's only temporary though, post-graduation should be much better. Two jobs on top of my final internship in the fall mean little or no time for half ironman training. I'm sure if I wanted push myself into an early grave I could go for it BUT there are only 6 more months until graduation and relief. I can wait that long. With that being said, I'm going to back off my training until after graduation. I'm a little sad that 2014 isn't going to be the year I complete my first half Ironman but I'm also excited to start this new chapter in my life. Practicing nutrition is what I love. It was my love of running and triathlon that helped me find my career in nutrition in the first place so it only seems right that I continue my journey.
For now, I'm going to go back to basics with my training. I'm going to take this time and really focus on being a better athlete. I started my swim class last week and I learned that I have made more improvement that I thought. I can feel myself in the water now and I think I just need to work on strength and endurance rather than form. My teacher actually told me I was a graceful swimmer (if you can imagine that!) and that my form was just fine. She provided me with some great text resources to study up on.
So, I'm going to work on building my distance and strength in the pool. My teacher has also agreed to provide me with a swim program because I will have to drop the class after I start the new job. With any luck I'll be able to continue my work-outs on my own time. I'm also going to work on my heart rate. I have never been an athlete to train based on my HR but the more I learn about it the more beneficial I think it would be for me to begin. It's been fun trying to stay within my target HR while running. I practically have to walk! Goes to show my aerobic base is what I though it was!
I'm hopeful that 2015 will be my big year in triathlon. I'd also like to run my first full marathon as well. For now I'm just going to focus on becoming a more efficient athlete, hopefully by next year and I can emerge better for it and ready to tackle an amazing triathlon season!
