National "Kids Eat Right" Month

Happy Friday friends! I hope the close of this week finds you all in good spirits. Me? I’ve been busy chopping away at half Ironman training. I’m just wrapping up my fourth week and first month of training and I’m feeling great! I’ve been vlogging as much as I can and hope to get those videos up soon. Aside from training I’ve been oh so busy getting my kiddos back-to-school ready. I feel like the school year takes me by surprise every year (even when I start early) and I’m running around getting last minutes things taken care of. We have one last week! Eeek! With all of this back to school buzz I thought it would be fun to recognize that August is National "Kids Eat Right" Month. …and if there is one thing I LOVE to talk about, it’s nutrition.

One of the hardest things I’ve had to work on as a nutritionist and a Mom is my children’s intake. My son has finally reached high school age and with his busy athletic schedule and rapid growth rate it’s more important than ever that he get the proper nutrition to fuel his body. He has become such a picky eater over the last few years and we’re struggling to keep him above the 10th percentile. Basically, he’s skin and bones. On the other hand, I have my daughter who will eat just about anything as long as it’s not spicy. Last year we made the move to packed lunches when we discovered that both children were eating nothing but hamburgers, cookies and chips every day.

I know many of the parents I counsel run into these same issues and many more. It can be hard when dealing with kids; we want what’s best for them but we also want to them like what they’re eating. Kids eat right month is a great time to sit down and remind yourself and your children what it means to eat healthy. This month I’d like to share some fun tips on how to keep your children healthy and active. I’ll be sharing some of my favorite infographics from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Kids Eat Right campaign. Be sure to check back or visit their website for more information.
